Dental filling is a procedure to treat decayed teeth or teeth that are cracked, broken or chipped. The dentist will use a filling material to fill the damaged area to prevent further decay and allow the tooth to function normally.
The dentist will examine the tooth for cavities visually along with an X-ray.
Use dental instruments to remove the decayed portion.
Clean the cavity and prepare the surface
The filling material is added and shaped to fit the tooth.
Make the surface smooth and usable as usual.
Types of dental filling materials
• Silver amalgam is strong and durable, but not beautiful and is not popular today.
• Composite Resin is the same color as natural teeth, beautiful but has a shorter lifespan than some types.
• Ceramic (Ceramic/Inlay-Onlay) is tooth-colored, durable, and does not change color easily, but is expensive.
• Gold (Gold Filling) is very strong and durable, but expensive.
Advantages of Dental Fillings
• Prevent the spread of tooth decay
• Restore the function of the teeth
• Reduce tooth sensitivity or toothache
• Make your teeth look natural (if you choose tooth-colored materials)
Disadvantages or side effects
• Some materials may deteriorate over time.
• The filling material may need to be replaced if leakage occurs.
• If the tooth decay is very deep, a filling may not be sufficient and a root canal may be required.
Dental checkups should be done every 6 months to detect cavities and treat them in time before the problem worsens.
When to do it
Dental fillings are done when a tooth is decayed or worn out. The fillings fill in the gaps caused by decay or damage to the tooth, allowing it to function normally again.
Way
The dentist removes the decayed and infected tooth material and fills the decayed area with a filling material (such as composite resin, amalgam, or ceramic).
Strength
Root canal treatment allows teeth that would otherwise have to be extracted to remain in the mouth and still be functional.
Post-treatment symptoms
There may be some pain after treatment, but this usually decreases with time.
